FLL Runway 92-R27L Expansion Exterior Tunnel Aesthetic Design

The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) Expansion of Runway 9R/27L project was awarded by Broward County to the PBS&J + RS&H team.

The project, an $810 million capital improvement effort, is significant because it involves complete reconstruction of the south runway at FLL, expanding it from 5,000 feet to more than 8,000 feet in length. The project will span Federal Highway and the Florida East Coast (FEC) Railroad tracks.

As a significant part of the team, Cartaya and Associates Architects, P.A. were tasked with providing the design of the tunnel entrances on US-1 including the interior and exterior aesthetics of the structures. Broward County selected a team with relevant and recent experience who is familiar to the FLL airport. This team understands the complexities of permitting, stakeholder coordination, and developing design resolutions that simplify maintenance for staff and operations for the public during construction.
